What is a novena?
In Roman Catholic tradition, a novena (Latin for “nine”) is a series of prayers repeated vocally over the course of nine consecutive days. The number nine has classically been associated with sorrow in the Christian Church, and the first novena is believed to have been said by the Virgin Mary on behalf of her Son while He suffered on the cross. Many also meditate using Rosary or Chaplet beads, but for this novena it is not necessary.
You do not have to be Catholic to pray this prayer, in fact many other Christian groups include novenas as part of their faith building, devotion and praise to God. For Catholics, I will include the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be to be prayed after the main prayer. (optional)
God of our Fathers,
we thank You for our nation,
founded by those who believed in Your Word
and came to this land as if out of the desert
to seek a place of freedom and rest.
We thank You for their conviction
that our rights come from You, our Creator,
and that government exists
to secure those rights,
and never to destroy or weaken them.
Now that we face unjust mandates
that call upon us to violate our conscience,
we pray for Your protection.
Keep us faithful to You in our every deed.
Grant that we may work for change
by being citizens who are active in the process
by which we elect our leaders.
Grant that by our efforts to educate and mobilize voters,
we may replace public officials who ignore Your law
with those who observe it faithfully.
Bless our nation’s upcoming elections.
As we rejoice that we are citizens of Your Kingdom,
so make us always faithful citizens on earth.
We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
The Our Father (pray once)
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The Hail Mary (repeated three times)
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
The Glory Be (prayed once)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
May God Bless your family and God Bless the United States of America.
